Bakı. Nicat Mustafayev - APA-Economics. Growth in international air passenger traffic slowed in March, hit by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and unrest in the Middle East and North Africa.

International Air Transport Association (IATA) data showed passenger traffic grew 3.8 percent in March from a year ago, down from a revised 5.8 percent in February.

Air freight -- an important measure of world trade -- rose 3.7 percent on the year, rebounding from 1.8 percent growth in February, IATA said.

"The second quarter is likely to see continued depressed air travel markets due to the events in Japan and MENA," IATA said in a statement.

"However, strong underlining economic growth trends should support recovery in both passenger and cargo markets in the second half of 2011.
