National Security Ministry of Azerbaijan frustrates Al Qaeda-linked group led by an Arab

The Ministryâ€™s Public Affairs Office said that the ministry made an operation to frustrate an Arab-origin Abu Jafar and a number of other gang members who formed an armed group of radical wahabites and those who actively participated in armed conflicts.
They were found to have relations with Al- Qaeda and Al-Jihad terrorist groups.
A group member Abdullayev Telman Teymur, who is a resident of Gusar City, put up armed resistance against the arrest and managed to escape after firing at two policemen on September 26. After that, police beefed up search operation and arrested other members Vidadi Karimov, Adil Garaykhanov, Vitali Aghammamadov, Asaf hazarov and Daniyal Abuyev.
It was discovered that the group is plotting to help Abu Jafar to escape Azerbaijan. The apartment in Sumgait, where Abu Jafar was hidden, was taken under control. On October 10, during an operation to the apartment Abdul Malik and Elchin Alimirzayev a.k.a Haji were arrested but Abu Jafar fired at officers and managed to escape. After that, the whereabouts of Abu Jafar and two gang members, armed with grenades and other firearms, were identified and on November 2-3 Abu Jafar, Mirza Babayev, Gadir Hajiyev, Vugar Aliyev, Emin Jami, Loghman Muradov, Habil Masmaliyev and Pariv Karimov were seized. Before the arrest, Abu Jafar threatened officers to detonate a grenade which he was holding in his hand. But specially trained officers thwarted him and handcuffed.
During the operation, 1 AKMS submachine gun, 3 pistols, 1 rifle, 12 hand grenades, 11 special lighters, 1.075 grams of explosives, 4-meter long Bigford wire, 91 detonators, 4 pistol magazines, 4 submachine gun magazines, 25 bullets, about 600 cartridges, 3 special lanterns, 2 compasses, 1 signal firework unit, 1 electricity conducting device, maps and other supplies.
The Ministryâ€™s Investigation Department has instituted Criminal Case under Articles 279.2, 315.2, 228.2.1 and the 15 gang members were sent to custody for investigation period by a court decision. The Ministry said investigation and operation are under way. /APA/
