Azerbaijani arrested in Iran reportedly spied for third country

Abdullayev studied in Gum city, Al-Mehdi supreme religious school in 1993-1998. Distinguished among other Azerbaijani students, he was allowed to give religious lessons to younger Azerbaijani pupils in 1997. In 1998 he was accused of sexual abuse against one of Azerbaijani pupils. Escaped Abdullayev was detained by law-enforcers on Iran-Azerbaijan border and was returned to Gum. Abdullayev was expelled from school and Iran, he was banned to return to Iran. Abdullayev returned to Azerbaijan and was mullah in Lerik for some time.
Former chief of Azerbaijan Islam Party Haji Alikram Aliyev told APA that Abdullayev gave testimony in the court hearing on the case of Nardaran people arrested in 2002 for Nardaran events.
“I can not say what he wrote before the court hearing, but I think that he work for intelligence bodies,” he said.
Sources in Iran told APA that the person arrived in Iran last year, was accused of spying for a third country and detained by law enforcers early in 2007.
Abdullayev’s 80-year old father told APA’s southern bureau that Medet Abdullayev, who has two daughters and a son, went to Iran a year ago and never came back. Medet Abdullayev’s father said he had not appealed to any organization about his son and said he would tell nothing when asked.
Firuza Huseynova, representative of Monidigah executive office said that as Abdullayev trespassed on the neighboring country, he is supposed to be arrested by Iranian frontier-guards. /APA/
