# 09 October 2007 11:28 (UTC +04:00)
The congress told APA that the letter was signed by the congress president Natig Agamirov. The statement notes the fruitful activity of Green Cross International on the peacekeeping and maintaining the stability in the world and the protection of the environment.
“We are closely following and supporting this activity. Being representatives of the nation, which had suffered from wars and conflicts, we, Azerbaijanis, are supporting any forms and methods of fight against any kinds of violence over the human values and declaring ourselves to be among those entrusted themselves with this important mission,” the statement says.
But the statement also points out some contradictions between Gorbachov’s current mission and certain points of his previous activity.
“At the same time, the European Azerbaijan Congress representing interests of hundred thousands of Azerbaijanis living in Europe considers it rather important to mention that there are some contradictions between your current mission and certain points of your previous activity. Bloody consequences of the cruel actions of the Soviet Army against peaceful population of Azerbaijan, Georgia, as well as Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia when you were a Secretary General of CC CPSU (CK KPSS) are engraved in the memory of our nation. Till now Azeri nation is keeping on to piously revere blessed memory of innocent victims of 20 January 1990 tragedy in Baku, led to the death and injuries of hundreds of innocent people,” the statement says.
The congress asks Gorbachov to answer sincerely and in details the following questions:
Do you think it is possible to justify the desire to keep the Soviet Empire pursuing the policy of totalitarian regime by the way of cruel, anti-human measures, like the ones applied on the 20th of January?
Do you believe that you will be justified by unavoidable historical judgment with regard to this terrible tragedy?
Do not you think that the mission of your organization Green Cross International contradict certain points of your previous activity?
And finally, what can your organization do for Azeri nation suffered enormous ecological losses as a result of the war lasting for more than 20 years and resulted in death of more than 30 thousand people, and about one million people had to leave their home lands?
The congress said that the representative of the congress Vusala Huseynova left the Netherlands for the US to hand in the letter to Mikhail Gorbachov at the meeting of the General Assembly of the Green Cross International in New Orleans on October 5-6. But the security did not allow her handing in the letter to Gorbachov.
Alexander Likotel, Gorbachov’s protocol chair did not receive the statement either, grounding that the text is severe. It was only possible to give him the book on Khojaly tragedy. /APA/
