Suicide in police office will be investigated, Interior Ministry official says

He said apprehended person Aliyev Rustam Nabi, who committed suicide hanging himself in the cell of police office, was charged under article 234 (illegal manufacturing, purchase, storage, transportation, transfer or selling of narcotics, psychotropic substances) of the Penal Code of Azerbaijan. Behboudov said regional representative of his committee was investigating the incident in Lankaran. Behboudov said Aliyev Rustamâ€™s relatives told him that it was not a suicide and he was beaten to death and there were signs of torture on his body.

The human rights defender said it was a fact of torture, but he couldnâ€™t get any information from the Interior Ministry.

Spokesman for the Interior Ministry Ehsan Zahidov told APA that the relativeâ€™s supposition canâ€™t be evidence. â€œConditions of the death will be identified by the medical examination. The fact is that he hanged himself with his clothes. His relatives make preliminary suppositionsâ€.

Lankaran Region Prosecutorâ€™s Office launched a criminal case on article 125 (bringing to suicide) of the Penal Code of Azerbaijan.
