He said they had recently received a lot of complaints from Rospotrebnadzor (the Federal Service on Control over Consumer Rights and Human Well-Being) and announced sanitary days in the bazaar to eliminate the shortcomings. Yevtikhiyev did not say when the bazaar would open.

Early in June, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin speaking of the shortcomings in customs system said smuggled goods worth several billions rubles had been found in one of the biggest bazaars in Moscow. After that media focused attention on Cherkizov bazaar. Soon after that Prosecutor General Yuri Chayka said several thousands of containers full of smuggled goods posing threat to life had been found in Cherkizovo bazaar. Senior investigator of the Russian Prosecutor’s Office Alexander Bastrikin said a center had been established to shut down the bazaar that he called “nest of vipers” and federal service controlling drug trafficking joined the inspections. Mayor of Moscow Yuri Luzhkov said the bazaar might be shut down by the end of 2009.

Cherkizov bazaar is owned by head of AST Group of Companies, Azerbaijan-born Russian businessman of Jewish origin Telman Ismayilov.
