Human Rights Commissioner issues statement on International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

Baku. Kamala Guliyeva – APA. Human Rights Commissioner Elmira Suleymanova issued a statement on the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. The statement has been sent to the UN Secretary General, UN Assistant Secretary General, UN Special Envoy for Children and Armed Conflict, UN Commissioner for Human Rights, OSCE, Council of Europe, International and European Ombudsman Institutions, Asian Ombudsman Association, International Peace Bureau, Universal Peace Federation, human rights commissioners of various countries, Azerbaijani embassies abroad, foreign embassies in Azerbaijan and Diaspora organizations. The statement says that 20 percent of Azerbaijani territories have been occupied by Armenia, the country’s population has undergone ethnic cleansing and tortures, one million people have been displaced.
“Tens of thousands Armenians live in Azerbaijan in the atmosphere of respect for ethnic, religious diversity and principles of tolerance, while over 200,000 Azerbaijanis underwent torture in Armenia and were deported as a result of the ethnic cleansing policy. Women, the old, disabled people, children were killed atrociously during Khojaly genocide on the night of February 25-26, 1992. The people were burned alive, skinned, their eyes were gouged out.”
Human Rights Commissioner says that hotline service, quick investigation group have been established in the Human Rights Commissioner’s Office, experienced advisors work on protection of prisoners, struggle against tortures.
