Baku. Elnur Mammadli – APA. Chairman of Azerbaijan Anti-Torture Committee Elchin Behboudov held a press conference on the occasion of June 26, the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, APA reports. Behboudov said the UN Convention against Torture was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1984 and, following ratification by the 20th state party, it came into force on 26 June 1987. The committee chairman said there were facts of torture in the number of countries today, but many states conceal these facts. Behboudov said the torture was a black spot and particularly post-soviet countries kept a silence over June 26. “Azerbaijan joined the UN Convention, but the facts of torture are concealed in our country too and the number of victims of torture is not reduced”.

The committee chairman said convicted people addressed them about the facts of torture. Behboudov said two died in jail in 2009 and they received 50 complaints about the tortures. Three convicted persons died in 2008.
Behboudov said his committee had more than 200 members and 13 regional offices.
