Head of Islam Religious Community in Garadagh district gives testimony in trial of radical religious group

Baku. Hafiz Heydarov – APA. Hearing on the case of former officer of Azerbaijani Army Kamran Asadov and 19 others continued in the Military Court of Grave Crimes. APA reports that judge Islam Neymanov presided over the process. Head of Islam Religious Community in Gobustan, imam of the settlement mosque Sheikh Uzeyir Simirov gave testimony. He said he belonged to “Ehli sunne-el-jemaet” sect and did not know any of the defendants.
“Maybe one of them did prayer in our mosque and knew me. But it does not mean that I know them,” he said.
He said Islam Religious Community and Gobustan mosque were registered when Rafig Aliyev chaired the State Committee for Religious Organizations and had not faced any problem since then.
Sheikh Uzeyir said he the member of the inspection commission struggling against Wahhabism and nurchulug and added that there was no trend of “wahhabism” in Islam.
The hearing will continue in the second half of the day.
Kamran Asadov, Bakhtiyar Orujov, Farid Jabbarov, Elshan Mammadov, Kamran Babayev, Samir Mehbaliyev, Terlan Karimov, Edgar Aliyev, Ramil Karimov, Shirvani Babayev, Samir Aliyev, Yalchin Maharramov, Orkhan Alizadeh, Hajibala Huseynov, Azer Ibadov, Shahriyar Maharramov, Ramin Jalilov, Rovshan Abdulaliyev, Ilkin Ismayilov and Vugar Aliyev are accused of setting up a radical religious group, attempting to start military struggle, attacking on LUKoil petrol station in Baku, preparing terror attack on the U.S. and UK embassies in Azerbaijan.
