Human rights defender meets with sportsman Azad Mammadov arrested some days ago

Baku. Hafiz Heydarov â€“ APA. Azerbaijani silver medalist of the European freestyle wrestling championship Azad Mammadov is held in the Interior Ministryâ€™s Department to Combat Organized Crimes, chief of Azerbaijani Committee against Torture Elchin Behbudov told APA after meeting with him. The human rights defender said Mammadov faced charges under Article 178.3.2 (swindling a large sum) of the Criminal Code. Behbudov said the sportsman had been detained basing on complaints of several women. Behbudov refused to give additional information about the criminal case saying it was confidential. Mammadov did not complain of his detention condition, but did not admit the accusations.

As a result of the operations carried out by the Interior Ministryâ€™s Department to Combat Organized Crimes, silver medalist of the European championship Azad Mammadov was detained in Gokhmug village of Shaki region on April 14. Mammadovâ€™s hosue in Gokhmug was searched. 1 Winchester Rifle, 1 â€œTirâ€ rifle and an air pistol were found in his house.

Mammadov won silver medal in the European freestyle wrestling championship in Russia in 1999.
