Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev said this while commenting on the statements issued regarding the arrest of Anar Mammadli, head of the Election Monitoring and Democracy Studies Center, APA reports.

“Issuing statements interfering in the activity of judicial system and investigation process, politicizing the essence of criminal case, taking steps to equate criminal act with political activity, calling on judicial authorities to pass different decisions are disrespect for the sovereignty of the Republic of Azerbaijan, entirely unacceptable and groundless and regarded as blackmail,” he said.

Spokesman for Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry said as noted in the statement issued by Azerbaijani Prosecutor General's Office on December 20, 2013, co-founder and chairman of the Election Monitoring and Democracy Studies Center Anar Mammadli was sentenced to pre-trial detention, since there were grounded suspicions that he committed the acts envisaged in articles 192.2.2. 213.1 and 308.2 of the Criminal Code.

“The abovementioned criminal case will be completed objectively in accordance with the criminal procedure legislation of Azerbaijan Republic,” he said. Elman Abdullayev urged to wait for the completion of the investigation of the case and results of the court decision. The US Department of State issued a statement on the arrest of Anar Mammadli and called to immediately release him.
