“After the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia was initialed in Washington last month, we are entering a new historical period in the region - the South Caucasus, and in this regard, we deemed it appropriate to inform our Austrian colleagues and friends about the situation,” the President’s Special Representative for Special Assignments, Elchin Amirbayov, said in an interview with Austria Press Agentur - Austria Press Agency, APA reports.
He specifically noted the problem arising from the current Constitution of Armenia. Namely, there are territorial claims regarding Nagorno-Karabakh in the preamble of the Constitution.
Great opportunities for long-term peace
“The peace agreement to be signed envisages the mutual renunciation of territorial claims,” Elchin Amirbayov said.
He emphasized that there are great opportunities for long-term peace and stability in the region.
Elchin Amirbayov cited the construction of a 43-kilometer road and railway line which will pass through Armenian territory, connect the west of Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan, as an important step in this direction: “This is not only about the unification of two parts of Azerbaijan but also about the connection between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as between Asia and Europe,” he described the project traditionally known as the Zangezur corridor, but called in Washington the “Tramp Route for International Peace and Prosperity.”
"This is a peace project that everyone in the region can benefit from, if there is political will," he said in response to Iran's criticism.
