"Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are connected by centuries-old brotherhood, spiritual and cultural affinity," Kazakh political scientist Aman Mambetaliyev said in a statement to APA.
According to the expert, after regaining their independence, both countries have been pillars of the Turkic world and active members of the Organization of Turkic States: “Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan see cooperation in the Turkic world as an important element of their foreign policy course and a tool for strengthening regional stability. Over more than 30 years of diplomatic relations, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan have consistently developed a dialogue based on mutual respect, trust, and support, raising relations to the level of strategic partnership.
The peculiarity of Kazakhstan-Azerbaijani relations lies in their multifaceted nature - from political and economic spheres to humanitarian and cultural cooperation. Economic cooperation is complemented by strengthening ties in the fields of education, science, and media, while “soft diplomacy” implemented at the level of public and cultural initiatives creates a solid social basis for future rapprochement. The Azerbaijani diaspora in Kazakhstan plays an important role. According to estimates for 2021–2025, the number of the Azerbaijani diaspora in Kazakhstan is approximately 155 thousand people. The diaspora actively participates in the activities of the Assembly of the Peoples of Kazakhstan, contributes to intercultural dialogue and the development of humanitarian relations. This human factor creates a solid foundation for mutual understanding between the two peoples and promotes the exchange of experience in the fields of education, media, and art”.
The political scientist noted that currently, there is also a positive dynamic in trade relations, and these relations are expected to increase further in the future. Both countries are leaders in their regions: “Kazakhstan plays the role of a “gateway” to Central Asia, and Azerbaijan to the Caucasus, which creates great potential. Economic cooperation between our countries is growing dynamically. In the first half of 2025, the trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan amounted to 331.7 million US dollars, which is an increase of almost 40% compared to the same period in 2024. Of this, 281.6 million dollars were Kazakhstan’s exports, and about 50 million dollars were imports. According to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Economy, imports from Kazakhstan increased almost 5 times in January-July 2025, reaching 448 million dollars. Azerbaijan is one of Kazakhstan’s ten largest trade partners in the region”.
Aman Mambetaliyev also noted that Kazakhstan's main export products are metallurgy, grain, oil products and chemical industry products: "Azerbaijan exports electronics, equipment, and food products. In the long term, the two countries aim to increase their mutual trade turnover to $1 billion - this goal is considered quite realistic by both countries."
