It was evident in advance that Russia would resort to various provocations on the eve of the Washington meeting, Arzu Naghiyev, Chairman of the Committee on Defense, Security and Combating Corruption of the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament) told APA.
Arzu Naghiyev said that this is directly related to Russia losing its influence in the region amid the changing geopolitical balance and its unwillingness to abandon its policy of hegemony: “In particular, drone attacks on compressor stations located in Ukrainian territory, the disabling of those facilities, as well as the targeting of certain infrastructure used by Azerbaijan to transport oil and gas to Europe, can be considered part of these provocations. In addition, the escalation of tensions in the region on the anniversary of the war against Georgia, developments in Moldova, and the weakening of Russian influence in other neighboring countries also heighten Moscow’s concerns. Russia is not backing down from this policy. The recent active participation of the Azerbaijani leadership in international events is also causing irritation in certain circles. In such a situation, Azerbaijan’s law enforcement and security agencies are closely monitoring developments and are fully prepared to take all necessary measures to prevent any incidents.”
The Committee Chairman noted that the repeated targeting of infrastructure located in the city of Odesa, which is one of the routes transporting Azerbaijan’s oil, as well as the explosion that occurred near the Azerbaijani embassy, are not coincidental: “All these facts show that Russia is resorting to various means of pressure in order to keep the processes in the region under control and to preserve its role. It cannot be ruled out that these processes will continue. Therefore, every citizen of Azerbaijan must correctly assess these realities and remain vigilant for the sake of the state’s security. The independent domestic and foreign policy pursued by President Ilham Aliyev is not accepted by some power centers, including Russia.”
Arzu Naghiyev stated that Moscow wanted to assume the role of mediator in the processes and remain the main player in regional affairs: “Azerbaijan has no territorial claims against any state. However, any threat directed against our country will be firmly countered, and we must always be prepared for it.”
