On the one hand, Azerbaijan is laying the foundation for lasting peace with Armenia, while on the other hand, it is elevating its strategic partnership with the United States to a new level, said Prime Minister Ali Asadov at a special meeting dedicated to the historic visit of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, to Washington, APA reports.
The Prime Minister stated that the Washington visit was marked by Azerbaijan-US relations entering a qualitatively new stage: “The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for the preparation of the Azerbaijan-US Strategic Partnership Charter opens a new chapter of cooperation and strategic partnership in the development of Azerbaijan-American interstate relations. During the meeting held at the White House, the repeal — after 33 years and in the presence of the head of the Azerbaijani state — of the unjust Section 907 of the ‘Freedom Support Act’ adopted by Congress in 1992 against our country is clear evidence of President Ilham Aliyev’s exceptionally high international standing. As President Ilham Aliyev said, ‘Today, Azerbaijan does not need foreign aid; our country is not dependent on it. Our economy is stable, our foreign debt is less than seven percent of GDP. We have become a donor country ourselves.’ Therefore, President Trump’s repeal of this amendment carries symbolic meaning and, by eliminating this historic injustice against Azerbaijan, reflects the U.S. President’s special regard for President Ilham Aliyev. In addition, the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between SOCAR and ExxonMobil within the framework of the visit is a continuation of the partnership that began within the framework of the national oil strategy, which was founded with the "Contract of the Century", at a new stage.”
