Speaker of the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament) Sahiba Gafarova, as part of her working visit to the Republic of South Africa, spoke at the 11th Summit of the Parliamentary Speakers of the “Group of Twenty” countries (G20) on the topic of “Strengthening Resilience and Response to Disasters,” the Press and Public Relations Department of the Milli Majlis told APA.
The speaker stated that no country is immune to the consequences of climate change.

Sahiba Gafarova recalled that last November, under the leadership of Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, one of the most successful COPs – COP29 – was hosted. The speaker said that Azerbaijan managed to build stronger bridges between the Global South and the Global North to achieve common goals, particularly ensuring that the voices of developing countries are heard.
She also providing information about the important outcomes of COP29, officially named the “Baku Climate Solidarity Pact” by the UN, stated that these include the adoption of the New Collective Quantitative Goal (known as the Baku Finance Goal), the full operationalization of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on international carbon markets, the adoption of a decision ensuring the full functioning of the Loss and Damage Fund, important issues such as the Baku Adaptation Roadmap, and the establishment of the Baku High-Level Dialogue on Adaptation.
Sahiba Gafarova also noted that, together with the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament) hosted a parliamentary meeting within the framework of COP29 aimed at uniting parliamentary efforts against climate change.
At the end of her speech, the Chairperson of the Milli Majlis stated that with the successful completion of COP29, Azerbaijan has once again demonstrated that solidarity, compromises, and collective actions are indispensable for achieving desired results in the face of common challenges.
