"The constructiveness of the discussions between Armenia and Azerbaijan is currently related to the fact that the peace process is in the hands of both countries and that decisions are made by both states," said Hikmat Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan - Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration, in an interview with the German publication Berliner Zeitung, APA reports.
“Neither Russia, the European Union, nor the United States were represented in these talks. The room was occupied by Armenians and Azerbaijanis. A civilized dialogue took place between us. We do not need anyone to dictate to us how to live in peace. Despite the absence of diplomatic relations, very productive discussions took place between us.”
The presidential aide also touched upon the importance of being extremely vigilant against the new wave of revanchism in Armenian society:
“We are already seeing a number of calls against the new “status quo” that has emerged in the region. At the same time, we are witnessing new attempts to destroy new realities and involve Armenian youth in new confrontations and wars. That is why Armenia should pay attention to its society. I believe that the amendments to the Constitution in this country will be an important step towards stopping all this. In any case, from the outside it seems that the peace process has reached a deadlock. We are waiting for Armenia to amend the Constitution. We are not in a diplomatic vacuum. There are precedents. Remember the agreement between the United Kingdom and Ireland in 1998. At that time, the Constitution of Ireland contained territorial claims against Northern Ireland.”
