Greenland can count on the European Union for political, economic, and financial support, but NATO is responsible for security issues, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during a visit to Cyprus for the traditional visit of the College of European Commissioners to the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU, APA reports.
"Greenland can count on us politically, economically and financially, and when it comes to security, discussing security issues in the Arctic is, first and foremost, a key issue for NATO," EUObserver quotes von der Leyen as saying.
The head of the European Commission also noted that the Arctic and regional security are key issues for the EU. "Therefore, we will continue to work to ensure security in the Arctic with our allies and partners, including the United States," she said.
