Security in the Arctic should be a priority for NATO, Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Wednesday, highlighting growing strategic competition in the region, APA reports.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, Rutte noted that several European countries, including the United Kingdom and Germany, are discussing plans to increase their military presence in Greenland.

Commenting on Russia’s recent use of “Oreshnik” missiles in attacks on Ukraine, Rutte said Moscow is attempting to discourage NATO from continuing its support for Kyiv, but stressed that the Alliance would not be deterred.

“Ukraine’s security is our security,” Rutte said. He acknowledged that some NATO allies, including Hungary and the United States, are opposed to or skeptical about Ukraine’s full membership in the Alliance, describing this as a known and established fact.
