The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is discussing possible changes to mobilization approaches, specifically the establishment of a new upper age limit for conscription, Prm.ua reports.
This involves potentially limiting the mobilization of citizens upon reaching 50 or 55 years of age.
Roman Kostenko, secretary of the parliamentary committee on national security, defense, and intelligence, reported this in a commentary to Ukrainska Pravda. According to him, there’s no final decision yet—the General Staff is still considering various options. At the same time, the potential restriction may not apply to conscripts with specialties in short supply or critical to the Defense Forces.
“They are discussing the possibility of changing approaches to mobilization based on age, in particular, limiting the conscription of citizens over 50 or 55 years of age,” Kostenko noted. He also explained that, in his opinion, it is not necessary to change legislation in order to establish a new upper age limit; the issue can be resolved by an appropriate administrative decision.
At the same time, lowering the mobilization age below 25 is not currently being considered. Such a solution would require legislative changes. As a reminder, the transition period for businesses in Ukraine that must confirm their critical status ends on September 1. If a company fails to do so, its employees may lose their mobilization protection.
