North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Thursday that the alliance will be there to support the mission to open the Strait of Hormuz if it is deemed that it would be "helpful", APA reports.
"I would argue, let's do it step by step, but with speed. And the step now being taken is for this coalition of now 34 countries who are gathered together at a military level last Tuesday, to start doing the detailed planning for what the Hormuz mission could be. I think that is step one. If NATO can help, obviously, NATO is there. There is no reason to be helpful, obviously we will. If that's helpful. But I think that we need to do it step by step," Rutte said.
The NATO chief emphasized that all allies would have to agree to play a role in the Hormuz mission, but that in this case, structure is less important than speed.
