On September 17, a Russian drone attacked a civilian vessel flying the Tanzanian flag in the Black Sea as it was heading to one of Ukraine’s ports, Intent reports.
The ship’s captain was killed in the attack. This was reported by the Ministry of Recovery, Infrastructure, and Transport of Ukraine.
In addition to the captain who was killed, three other crew members were injured. The technical condition of the vessel is currently being assessed.
As the ministry emphasized, Russia is systematically carrying out attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure and civilian merchant ships. Such attacks pose additional risks to crews, international shipping, and the stability of logistics routes in the Black Sea. Ukraine continues to work with international partners to strengthen the protection of civilian shipping, support maritime logistics routes, and prevent further escalation of security threats in the Black Sea.
In recent months, the Russians have been continuously attacking civilian vessels in the Black Sea. On September 9, Russian drones attacked the foreign cargo ship TEDY, which had Azerbaijani citizens on board. Two sailors were killed, and two others were injured.
Earlier, the enemy struck a merchant dry-cargo ship flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau, which was loaded with Ukrainian wheat. As a result of the attack, a Ukrainian sailor was killed, and three others were injured. Russia also struck a civilian vessel flying the Liberian flag near the port of Odesa—this was already the third attack on this dry cargo ship.
Another ship carrying a cargo of corn was struck by three Russian Kh-59/Kh-69 missiles as it was leaving the port of Odesa. Due to the damage, it lost its seaworthiness and sank approximately five nautical miles off the coast. Ten people were killed in that attack, including a Ukrainian pilot.
