What happened yesterday in Tbilisi once again exposed the level of polarization in Georgia. However, in this case, the entire responsibility lay with the opposition. This is because one part of the opposition participated in democratic elections, while another part boycotted the elections and effectively announced its intention to overthrow the government through revolution.
Georgia’s Honored Journalist, professor, and political analyst Badri Nachkebia said this in a comment to APA’s local bureau regarding the recent events in Tbilisi.

According to him, yesterday a group of people merely engaged in acts of hooliganism, and after clashes with police officers, everything came to an end.
“Many of those among the population who supported the opposition were deeply disappointed. It became clear that the opposition has neither a unified position nor a common plan. After yesterday, a serious rift has emerged within the opposition. Individual opposition leaders have already begun showing intolerance toward each other’s criticism and are displaying aggressive attitudes. This will further deepen the divisions within the opposition,” the expert noted.
The political analyst believes that the opposition is currently in a zugzwang situation, and it will be very difficult for it to get out of this complicated position.
“The opposition will face serious difficulties in conducting a normal confrontation with the ruling party and turning itself into a real political force. The lack of consolidation and a charismatic leader indicates that the opposition has entered a deep crisis since yesterday, and it will be very hard to recover from it. The election results showed that opposition candidates did not win in any municipalities. The ruling party, on the contrary, gained a significant advantage and will confidently lead its supporters until the next elections,” Nachkebia said.
The expert predicts that there will be no serious attempts at a government overthrow in the near future. He stated that the opposition is fragmented, and unless a strong leader emerges, the situation will remain unchanged.
Another expert commenting on the situation in Georgia’s capital to APA’s local bureau, Vaso Kapanadze, said that the opposition’s plan to overthrow the government was unrealistic.

He explained that the attempt at a coup under the guise of a so-called “peaceful revolution” failed due to serious mistakes.
“The crowd of protesters who tried to break into the presidential palace made serious errors. Their plan was neither realistic nor goal-oriented. They also did not have the solid support among citizens that they were counting on. The opposition is fragmented as well. All these factors determined their failure,” the political commentator said.
Kapanadze considers new attempts to stage a coup unlikely.
“No new attempts are expected in the near future. Both the opposition and its supporters have suffered a fiasco. Yesterday, the radical wing of the opposition committed political suicide. Even if new rallies are held, I do not expect them to reach a large scale,” he added.
