German Chancellor Friedrich Merz believes that Europe should achieve greater independence in its relations with the United States and should not diminish itself, APA reports, citing DPA.
Merz said that, in his assessment, the United States is increasingly shifting from rules based politics to an approach grounded in power.
“However, in that case we cannot bury our heads in the sand and try to get by somehow,” he said at a pre election event held in Heddesheim, located in the federal state of Baden Württemberg near Mannheim.
He added that if Germany wants to earn respect, it must learn to defend its own interests.
