Giorgi Gakharia has been placed under arrest in Georgia and is hiding in Germany. I don't know whether Germany respects legal procedures or not, I think Gakharia should be returned to Georgia, said the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, APA's local bureau reports.
The speaker said that he was not aware of the extradition procedures.
"The fact that Gakharia, who is wanted, is hiding in Berlin, and even being financed from various sources in Germany, makes one think and raises doubts," Papuashvili added.
Note that the Prosecutor General's Office of Georgia has opened a criminal case against Gakharia. The case is related to the events of June 20-21, 2019, and the establishment of a police post in the village of Chorchana, located near the occupation line. According to the charges, the former head of government could face up to 13 years in prison. In November last year, the Tbilisi City Court placed Gakharia under arrest in absentia. Gakharia has accused the Georgian Dream party of political persecution, stating that the charges against him are fabricated.
Recall that Gakharia served as Georgia's Minister of Internal Affairs from 2017 to 2019 and Prime Minister from 2019 to 2021. He left Georgia in June last year and is currently living in Germany on a long-term visa.
