The fifth attempt to stage a “Maidan” in Georgia has failed, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said at a briefing yesterday, According to APA’s local bureau.
He stressed that any efforts to create unrest in the country will be swiftly prevented, and those responsible will face punishment.
Kobakhidze stated that “national activists” have repeatedly sought to overthrow the government and destabilize the situation.
"The other day, the state gave a worthy response to these attempts. We have a responsibility before our voters to completely neutralize the collective ‘national movement’ and foreign agents in order to form a healthy, democratic political system in the country," he said.
The Prime Minister emphasized that many individuals involved in acts of violence against the state and law enforcement agencies will face severe punishment.
The comments came a day after an opposition-organized rally in Tbilisi, during which protesters attacked the Presidential Palace and entered the residence’s territory. Police deployed additional forces to the scene. Clashes left six protesters and 32 police officers injured.
Authorities detained five key organizers of the rally — Irakli Nadiradze, a member of the United National Defense Party; Murtaz Zodelava, a member of the party's political council; Lasha Beridze; Paata Manjgaladze, Secretary General of the “Aghmashenebeli Strategy” party; and Paata Burchuladze, leader of the “Rustaveli Avenue” movement.
They were charged with calling for the overthrow of the government and organizing group violence — offenses that carry prison sentences of up to nine years.
