The European Parliament today supported new rules to suspend visa-free travel for 61 countries, including Georgia, APA reports, citing European Parliament.
The information states that the new rules will facilitate the withdrawal of visa-free travel to the European Union for citizens from countries that pose a security risk or violate human rights.
The new mechanism allows the European Commission to quickly reintroduce visas for certain countries in the event of security threats or human rights violations. This can be done in several stages - first temporarily, while an investigation and dialogue are conducted, and then permanently if the problems persist.
Note that the visa-free regime for Georgia is intended to be limited only to responsible officials.
