The European Union is exploring the possibility of starting bilateral talks with Tehran, La Repubblica reports.
The main goal is to ensure safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and address Europe’s energy problems. According to the publication, the idea has been discussed informally at the level of the European Commission, the leadership of the European Council, and the governments of several European countries. The plan envisages the creation of a direct diplomatic channel between the EU and Iranian officials.
The EU is considering reaching an agreement with Iran on the movement of ships belonging to European countries through the strait.
However, this initiative faces a number of serious obstacles. These include the European Union’s decision in February to include Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the list of terrorist organizations and the continuation of military operations in the region. In addition, not all 27 EU member states support this idea.
