Romanian parliament suspends president
# 19 April 2007 17:08 (UTC +04:00)
Romanias Parliament has voted to suspend the President over claims he violated the constitution, APA’s Eastern Europe bureau reports. A majority of deputies and senators voted in favor of the suspension of Traian Basescu. A commission supported by the opposition Social Democrat Party had accused Basescu of undermining the government.
The decision means there must be a referendum within a month, in which the Romanian public will decide whether to impeach their President. If, however, Basescu resigns, as he had vowed to do, there will be a snap presidential election within three months./APA/
