Baku-APA. A loud explosion was heard in Mauritania’s capital Nouakchott early Wednesday, according to a Reuters witness and residents, APA reports quoting news.yahoo.com website.

The noise from the blast woke residents in the city’s southern neighborhood of Arafat. At least two residents of the neighborhood told Reuters by telephone they could hear sirens and see ambulances moving through the street.

Mauritanian security officials were not immediately available to comment.

Mauritanian authorities had hours earlier captured a vehicle carrying explosives and weapons and detained several suspected members of al Qaeda’s north African wing, a security source told Reuters Tuesday.

Two other vehicles were being pursued at the time after crossing into Mauritania illegally from Mali on the weekend.
