Baku – APA. David Beckham says visiting British troops fighting in Afghanistan was "one of the best things" he has done in his career, APA reports quoting “Sky News”.
The former England captain took time out with the troops in Helmand in May ahead of the World Cup in South Africa.
The star, speaking on an online live chat platform hosted by the internet company Yahoo!, said: "That was one of the best things I’ve done in my career.
"It was really life changing. To go somewhere like Afghanistan where men and women are giving their lives.
"Throughout my career I’ve been training and playing but I’ve always wanted to do something like this."
The star said his parents were proud of him and his achievements as a footballer but thinking about how the parents of servicemen and women felt "gives you goosebumps".
Beckham was equally candid about his future career plans, ruling out a future job as England manager.
"I’ve got no interest in being a manager," he told host Gabby Logan.
"It’s not something I’ve ever been interested in."
The 35-year-old said England manager Fabio Capello was not to blame for the team’s dire World Cup performance.
"He (Capello) did everything that he could have done," said the midfielder.
"He prepared us right. He worked the players to the right amount and he set everything up for the players, but obviously the players know it was disappointing.
"We didn’t perform and as players you know that.
"The manager can do so much and then it’s down to the players.
"The players are honest about that but it’s not about individuals, it’s not about how individuals play - it’s about how we played as a team."
Beckham said a winter break in the Premiership season might be the way forward.
"People ask how can these players be tired. Germany and Spain had a great World Cup.
"That would definitely help."
Beckham went on to say he had two more ambitions to fulfill: Playing for Britain in the 2012 Olympics and scoring winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil.
