There is significant potential for cooperation between Germany and Azerbaijan, particularly in several major projects in the energy sector, Kristina Haverkamp, Managing Director of the German Energy Agency, said during a panel discussion held as part of the “German-Azerbaijani Strategic Partnership and Connectivity Conference 2026,” APA-Economics reports.
According to her, renewable energy currently accounts for 60% of electricity generation in Germany: “This means that, in addition to producing renewable energy, we also have extensive experience in integrating this energy into the transmission grid.
This is one of the main areas for cooperation. We have both the experience and the technologies. Digitalization should also be added here. If you want to increase transmission capacity without laying new cables, digitalization is playing an increasingly important role"
She also emphasized that there is potential for cooperation in maintenance and operation:
“It is not enough just to build the electricity grid; it also needs to be maintained in proper technical condition. Germany has extensive experience and expertise in this field. I believe there should also be stronger cooperation in capacity development and training. Both sides can learn from each other and exchange experience. This is particularly important in terms of involving young people in this process"
She noted that the agency has extensive experience with European rules and regulations related to connectivity.
“These are also closely linked to rules known as grid codes. This is quite a complex set of regulations.
“However, if you want to export electricity to the European Union and the final destinations of the Green Energy Corridor are Bulgaria and Hungary, it is important to know these rules and regulations.
“I think this is precisely an area where the institution I represent can support such a project. We consider this project very interesting. Germany has now become a net importer of electricity and wants to achieve climate neutrality. Therefore, if the opportunity arises, we are interested in receiving this energy,” she said.
