"The statement made by the Minister of Science, Research and Technology of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hossein Simaei-Sarraf, regarding education issues in Azerbaijan causes surprise and regret," the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan said in a statement, APA reports.

"This is a completely inappropriate statement and nothing more than an attempt to interfere in Azerbaijan's internal affairs. No one is allowed to interfere in our country's internal affairs, including its education policy, and such attempts at interference are firmly prevented.

We would advise Iranian officials to deal with the problems of their own country instead of interfering in the internal affairs of other countries.

As a result of the policies pursued by Iran, there is not a single school in that country where education is provided in the Azerbaijani language. Education in Azerbaijani is not provided at higher education institutions either. This is despite the fact that approximately 40 million of Iran's population are indigenous ethnic Azerbaijanis who have been deprived of the right to receive education in their native language for decades.

The Iranian Minister of Science, Research and Technology and other individuals in Iran who have spoken on this issue would do better to address these matters instead of interfering in Azerbaijan's internal affairs and take measures to eliminate this unprecedented injustice that has continued for decades," the statement reads.
