The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe passed a decision on marking the 10th of October as a “European Day against the Death Penalty”, APA Europe bureau reports.
On this occasion, the Committee expressed the hope that the European Union will join the initiative as soon as possible.
“The European Day against the Death Penalty will be an occasion to engage in a debate with those people in our 47 member states who continue to support capital punishment, explaining why this inhuman and degrading form of punishment is wrong, why it has been abolished and why it should stay abolished,” said Terry Davis, Secretary General of the Council of Europe. /APA/
