Thomas Hammerberg meets with Azerbaijani justice minister

Council of Europe (CE) Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammerberg while visiting Azerbaijan met with Justice Minister, chairman of Judicial Council Fikrat Mammadov, Justice Ministry’s press service told the APA.
The Minister touching on the democratic changes in the country gave information about the reforms for modernization of judicial system that serve protection of human rights, increase of efficiency of justice, development of justice bodies as well improvement of functioning of penitentiary service and measures taken for combating corruption.
Mr. Hammerberg stressing that special attention is paid to the protection of human rights in the country highly assessed national action plans on the protection of human rights approved by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and got interested in the measures taken for the implementation of the document. He also shared his opinions on the penitentiary services, including Gobustan jail he visited. The guest highly appreciating reforms carried out in justice and court systems underlined that functioning of new courts, increasing number of judges and their appointment serve reliable protection of human rights. /APA/
