Ashgabat debates reach consensus on some articles of Caspian Status Convention

During the two-day meeting, representatives of Russia, Iran, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan confirmed their common desire to achieving a consensus on this issue and agree on the text of the draft convention which is designed to regulate all kinds of offshore activities and interaction of the Caspian states. In particular, it was suggested during the session that the convention should be discussed article by article. A number of articles have been already fully agreed on. With a view to drawing closer the positions of their countries on the Caspian issue, the sides stated the importance of continuing consultations both in bilateral and multilateral format. It was emphasized that the process of development of the legal status of the Caspian Sea has entered its active stage.
Turkmenistan Foreign Affairs Ministry told the APA a communiqué was adopted in the end of the session. The communiqué says that the session participants positively assessed the Ashgabat meeting and expressed gratitude to the Turkmen side for warm reception and organization of work.
In accordance with the agreement, the 22nd session of the special working group will take place in Tehran.
