The European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS) told APA that commenting on Azerbaijan’s “mud volcanoes and beautiful, remote towns”, Gould’s article briefly dwells on the Old City of Baku, before moving to the regions.

He speaks that he constantly encountered: “an irresistibly gallant form of hospitality.”

Throughout, he explains the diversity of flora, fauna and foods in such areas as Lankaran, Astara and Sheki, before moving to Gabala, where he meets Tony Adams, former England and Arsenal footballer, who now manages Gabala FC.

Gould goes on to bear testament to the inherent religious tolerance of the country by visiting the Caucasian Albanian church in the village of Kish and the 3,500-strong Mountain Jew community in Krasnaya Sloboda in Quba. He attends a wedding in Ganja and visits a carpet workshop in Quba.

The author describes the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh as a “blight”, revealing that everyone he meets is “confused” by the non-implementation of the UN Security Council resolutions against Armenia. He concludes: “If you’re an aficionado of post-industrial ruins, of amazing nature, of exotic headgear, of world history, of kind gentleness and wild strangeness, Azerbaijan will surely light your fire.”

Kevin Gould visited Azerbaijan at the TEAS invitation.
