Moscow is confident that issues arising in the region should be resolved by the countries located there and their close neighbors, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated this during a joint press conference with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan in Yerevan, APA’s Moscow bureau reports.
Lavrov noted that Russia is not against non-regional countries developing relations with South Caucasus states.
“We are not opposed to non-regional countries developing relations as long as such cooperation does not aim to create tension or serve geopolitical games by disregarding the interests of the countries in this region — as is expected under global diplomatic practice,” the Russian Foreign Minister emphasized.
Lavrov stated that the European Union is active and is trying to expand its mechanisms in the South Caucasus and Central Asia regions.
“No one can forbid any country from developing relations with another. This should not be a zero-sum game,” he said.
“You cannot come and say: ‘We will offer you projects of interest, but you must cut ties with a particular country.’ This ‘divide and rule’ principle is foreign to Russia. There is nothing free about such an approach,” Lavrov emphasized.
