The Japanese Ambassador has been summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, Russian media reports.
According to him, following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Iturup Island and the summoning of the Russian Ambassador to the Japanese Foreign Ministry, the Japanese Ambassador was also summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Lavrov noted that the Japanese Embassy had not provided a specific response, saying that the Ambassador was either not in Moscow or was not feeling well.
“In any case, we have summoned the Ambassador, and he must come to the Foreign Ministry. We will discuss the Japanese leadership’s reaction to President Putin’s visit to Iturup Island and how the Ambassador should conduct himself in the host country. The Ambassador must respect the laws of the host country and the procedures in place for foreign diplomats in the country,” Lavrov stressed.
Note that Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Iturup Island, a disputed territory between Russia and Japan claimed by both sides.
