Official Yerevan: Pakistan’s recognition of Armenia as UN member not on agenda -UPDATED
# 09 September 2025 12:21 (UTC +04:00)

The issue of Armenia being recognized by Pakistan as a UN member state is not on the agenda, Ani Badalyan, spokesperson for the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the remark in response to a report by Russia’s TASS news agency about Pakistan’s intention to recognize Armenia as a UN member, APA reports.

“To uninformed sources, we would like to clarify that diplomatic relations have already been established between Armenia and Pakistan in accordance with the fundamental principles of the UN Charter. Therefore, the issue of ‘recognition at the UN’ is naturally not on the agenda. We have already stated on our part that the two countries, by developing bilateral cooperation, will also discuss issues of mutual engagement on multilateral platforms—whether in the SCO, EAEU, or other organizations of mutual interest,” the Armenian MFA spokesperson said.

Pakistan plans to recognize Armenia as a United Nations member state in order to get a green light to join the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), sources told TASS, APA’s Moscow bureau reports.

"Pakistan indeed plans to do that to ensure a consensus on its EAEU accession in return," a United Nations source said.

Another diplomatic source noted that the relevant procedure could take weeks to months. "In any case, this will happen in the foreseeable future," the source said. There are no obstacles left for such a development now that Armenia and Azerbaijan have signed a peace agreement, the source stressed.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier that Russia welcomed the resumption of communication between Armenia and Pakistan.
