A 5.8 magnitude earthquake jolted Assam's Guwahati at 4:41 pm, with tremors felt as far as North Bengal and neighbouring Bhutan, APA reports citing NDTV.
The quake had a depth of 5 kilometers and its epicenter was in the town of Udalguri, according to India's National Center for Seismology.
Terrified residents rushed outside their homes in Guwahati.
No reports of injury or damage to property have been received so far.
The northeast falls in the high seismic zone, making earthquakes frequent in the region, the officials said.
