Baku-APA. An overloaded ferry has overturned in India’s eastern waters, killing at least 16 people onboard and leaving more than 160 others missing, APA reports quoting Press TV.

Seventy other passengers have been reported missing after the ferry sank in a river in the Sunderbans Mangrove Forest, south of West Bengal.

"Fishing boats have fished out 16 bodies from the waters of the turbulent river," senior West Bengal state police officer Surojit Karpurokayastha was quoted by AFP on Saturday.

About 150 people were onboard the ferry at the time of the incident.

Such accidents happen frequently in India as boats are often overloaded.

In January, at least 19 people drowned after a boat capsized in a river in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal.
