US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Sunday’s meeting between top US and Ukrainian officials was “a very productive and useful session where … additional progress was made,” but that more work remains, APA reports citing CNN.
“We continue to be realistic about how difficult this is, but … as we’ve made progress, I think there is a shared vision here that this is not just about ending the war — which is very important — it is about securing Ukraine’s future, a future that we hope will be more prosperous than it’s ever been,” Rubio said in brief remarks following the hourslong meeting in South Florida.
The top US diplomat said the teams were not only working on terms that end fighting between Ukraine and Russia but also “the terms that set up Ukraine for long-term prosperity.”
He said the two sides had begun laying the groundwork for that last week in Geneva, Switzerland, and continued it in communications throughout the week.
“We’ve built on that again today, but there’s more work to be done,” he said.
Neither Rubio nor top Ukrainian official Rustem Umerov took questions from the press after the meeting.
