US President Donald Trump said he still believes Canada should become the 51st state in the US as he spoke to reporters at the White House while meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, APA reports citing CNN.

“It takes two to tango, right?,” Trump said. “I believe it would be a massive tax cut for the Canadian citizens. You get free military, tremendous medical cares, other things. There would be a lot of advantages,” Trump added.

Trump touted that he’s a real estate developer at heart and said when he looked at the two countries combined, “I said that’s the way it was meant to be.”

“But we’re not going to be discussing that unless somebody wants to discuss it,” the president added.

Carney pushed back and told Trump, “As you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale,” Carney said. “Having met with the owners of Canada over the course of the campaign, last several months — It’s not for sale. It won’t be for sale, ever,” he added.

Carney went on to say that the opportunity in Canada’s relationship with the US is “in the partnership and what we can build together and we have done that in past.” Carney said he agrees with Trump with respect to Canada’s security.

“My government is committed for a step-change in our investment in Canadian security and our partnership,” he said.

Carney also said that Trump has “revitalized” international security and NATO and that Canada will be putting their “full weight” in the intergovernmental transnational military alliance.

Trump agreed that Canada is stepping up their military participation, but then he circled back to the country becoming a US state and quipped: “Never say never.”
