At least 121,000 federal employees in the U.S. have been dismissed since Donald Trump took office in January of this year, CNN reported citing its own calculations, APA reports.
The report states that the mass layoffs have affected around 30 government agencies, with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) being the most impacted and following several waves of layoffs, the agency's operations have been completely shut down.
The Department of Education has laid off 51% of its staff and closed 7 out of its 12 regional offices.
Additionally, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the National Institutes of Health under the Department of Health and Human Services, have also lost a significant number of employees.
According to experts, the effects of these layoffs are already being felt by Americans, and raise questions about the government’s ability to serve its citizens' interests in education, healthcare, and public safety.
