Baku-APA. Venezuelan authorities have extended the house arrest of a judge whose case has been strongly criticized by human rights groups, APA reports quoting AP.

Judge Ali Fabricio Paredes ruled that his Maria Lourdes Afiuni must remain under house arrest for two more years because she has intentionally delayed her own trial by repeatedly refusing to enter a courtroom.

Afiuni faces corruption charges for releasing a banker accused of violating foreign exchange controls.

Government opponents say Afiuni’s case shows President Hugo Chavez’s influence over Venezuela’s judicial system. Chavez denies that he interferes with the courts.

Amnesty International and other rights groups are demanding her release.
