Baku – APA. A U.S. man who tried to get a job at the Central Intelligence Agency in order to spy for China has been sentenced to four years in prison, APA reports quoting “The Voice of America”.

The Justice Department says 28-year-old Glenn Duffie Shriver was sentenced at a federal court in Virginia Friday for conspiring to provide national defense information to Chinese intelligence officers.

Prosecutors say Shriver, who is proficient in Mandarin, made acquaintances with three Chinese agents while living in Shanghai in 2004.

Shriver admitted in court that his objective was to gain employment in a U.S. federal department or agency that would give him access to classified national defense information.

The Justice Department says he attempted to get a job at the CIA between 2005 and 2010, during which time the Chinese officers sent him $70,000 in three separate payments to thank him for his “friendship.”

Shriver’s sentencing comes at the end of Chinese President Hu Jintao’s four-day visit to the United States.
