Baku-APA. US Federal prosecutors say the FBI has arrested 127 reputed mobsters in three northeastern states and have dealt a major blow to the Mafia, APA reports quoting Press TV.

The mobsters, including high-ranking members of major Mafia crime families, were arrested in New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island, US Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday.

Defendants from numerous La Cosa Nostra families have been charged, including defendants from all five New York-based families: The Bonanno, Colombo, Gambino, Genovese and Luchese.

The detained are facing charges of murder, drug trafficking, extortion, illegal gambling, arson, loan-sharking and other crimes.

Authorities say they have obtained information through informants who recorded thousands of conversations by suspected mobsters.

It was the largest single-day Mafia crackdown in FBI history, involving 800 federal and local law-enforcement officials, Holder said.

The charges brought against the individuals carry a variety of maximum penalties up to as much as life in prison.
