Baku-APA. The U.S. Embassy in Kyrgyzstan has issued a statement saying it is concerned about reports that detainees are being tortured by Kyrgyz law enforcement officials, APA reports quoting voanews.com website.
The embassy statement was issued on Thursday. It calls on the government to meet its commitments to ensure that all prisoners receive due legal process and fair treatment.
There have been a series of violent incidents and bombings recently in Kyrgyzstan which authorities have blamed on Islamic militants.
The violence follows last year’s political turmoil which saw one government toppled by street protests, and ethnic riots between the Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbek communities, that left hundreds dead. Most of the dead were Uzbeks.
Kyrgyzstan hosts an important U.S. air base that serves as a link supplying U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan.
