The current President of Zimbabwe, 80-year-old Emmerson Mnangagwa, won the presidential election, APA reports citing AFP.
The Electoral Commission said he won 52.6% of the vote. Opposition leader 45-year-old Nelson Chamiza received 44% of the vote.
Voting took place on 23 and 24 August. Turnout was 69%. Mr Mnangagwa avoided a second round of elections by passing 50% of the vote.
According to AFP, the counting of votes was delayed, which is why the opposition accused the authorities of falsification and pressure on voters. International observers, the agency claims, said the election fell short of regional and international standards.
Emmerson Mnangagwa took over Zimbabwe in 2017 in a military coup. A year later, he narrowly defeated Nelson Chamiza in the presidential election. The oppositionist then also accused the authorities of falsifications.
